How to Look Up a Court Case in Northwest Florida
Free, official ways to find a criminal court case in Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Santa Rosa, or Escambia County.
How court case records work in Florida
When someone is charged with a crime in Florida, the case is filed with the clerk of court in the county where the arrest happened. The clerk keeps the official record: charges, court dates, motions, and outcomes. Every county in Northwest Florida offers a free online case search run by the clerk’s office. You do not need a lawyer, an account, or a paid service to use them.
What you need before you search
The person’s full legal name is enough for most searches. A date of birth helps when names are common, and a case number takes you straight to the file if you have one. Booking numbers from an arrest are not the same as court case numbers – the court assigns its own number once charges are filed, which can take a few days after an arrest.
Look up a case by county
Each guide walks through that county’s official clerk search step by step, with screenshots and tips for reading the docket.
If you can’t find a case
Recent arrests may not appear for several days while charges are reviewed and filed. Some cases are sealed or confidential by law. If the online search comes up empty, call the county clerk’s office directly – they can confirm whether a case exists and what is public.
This guide is general information, not legal advice. Court records reflect charges and filings, not guilt – every person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. For advice about a specific case, talk to a licensed Florida attorney.
